Guasha

Guasha means to “scrape the skin.” It is an ancient modality that has been recorded since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

Guasha is a medical modality that uses a blunt, smooth object and repetitive strokes along the skin to create a temporary ecchymosis (or bruising) which fades in 2-7 days depending on the patient’s health condition.

The color of the sha is both diagnostic and prognostic. Light-colored sha indicates blood deficiency. If the sha is purple or black, the blood stasis is long-standing. Dark red sha can also indicate heat.

Guasha helps with lymphatic drainage, blood circulation, qi circulation, relaxes and soothes muscle tension as well as emotional releases. Gua Sha helps to get rid of metabolic waste stuck in your tissues allowing for better nourishment of your body.

Guasha is also used whenever a patient has pain associated with an acute or chronic disorder, or when there is an aching or knotty feeling in the muscles. It can be used to similarly treat and prevent the common cold, flu, bronchitis, asthma, as well as any chronic disorder involving pain, congestion of the flow of qi and blood.

Facial Guasha

Facial Guasha is using the method of guasha on the face with gentler strokes and less pressure.

It is beneficial for chronically dry, dehydrated skin, aging skin characterized by reduced elasticity, sagging acneic or congestion-prone skin. It is seen as both a treatment and preventative therapy for the face.

Facial Guasha reduces facial puffiness, improvements in skin texture and tone, increased brightness, fewer lines and wrinkles, and improved contouring and sculpting of facial features. It is also used to relax the facial muscles which can hold tension and reflect the health of the body.

Integrating facial Guasha into your daily routine will result in a more hydrated, refreshed, healthier skin.

Dr. Kung has taught facial Guasha workshops at Dumbo House in New York City, NY, Austin, TX and in Taipei, Taiwan. She also advises for the organic skincare and facial Guasha line, Essentialist Inc.

Body Guasha

Body Guasha is the traditional way in TCM and in Chinese culture, to treat the body for muscular/emotional conditions, lymphatic drainage and encourage proper blood and Qi circulation.

Body Guasha can be done almost anywhere on the body using localized, even pressured strokes.

Results of the “Sha” can vary depending on the individual.
